Tim Race
Former New York Times Business and Technology Editor and Writer SVP, Narrative and Thought Leadership Method Communications
Tim provides narrative strategy and oversees the creation of bylines and other owned and earned content for corporate clients. His work draws upon journalistic techniques and media insights developed during more than two decades as a business editor, writer, and newsroom manager overseeing award-winning journalism in New York, Paris, and London for The New York Times.
After retiring from the Times in 2016, Tim was an SVP at the PR agency FleishmanHillard, before moving to IBM to help lead the company’s owned-content and thought leadership activities. He joined Method Communications in April 2021.
As a corporate strategist who has advised and produced content for global companies in information technology and AI; financial technology; telecommunications; industrial automation; pharmaceuticals; and agricultural biotech, Tim is conversant with a wide range of industries—as well as the public policies that govern them. He loves helping clients explain complex topics for the literate generalist—whether the audience is journalists, C-suite executives, or the curious public.
Tim’s “did you know?” facts include his coining the word “digerati” while editing a New York Times article some years ago, and a stint during his mid-20s conducting the University of Nigeria orchestra, where he also taught trumpet and ethnomusicology.
He has an M.A. in Journalism and Public Affairs from American University, an M.A. in Popular Culture from Bowling Green State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Ohio’s Miami University.
Tim’s wife, Lee Race, works in corporate communications at IBM. His daughter Megan, a former college professor in Russian Language and Literature, is a college admissions coach and advisor. His daughter Kylie is a first-year student at Cornell University.
A native of Possum Woods, Ohio, Tim now lives in Westport, Connecticut.
