The Environmental Footprint of Logic CMOS Technologies [Pre-Recorded]

IC manufacturing is a very complex and energy demanding endeavor. The drive to scale results in a strong increase in the complexity for each technology node. Up until now, the main drivers for this technology pathfinding have been power, performance, area, and cost and any environmental cost has been largely ignored. In this talk, we discuss how the environmental impact can and should be taken into account in an early phase of technology development. We find that, if left unchecked, a substantial increase in the carbon footprint of Logic CMOS is to be expected for future nodes.
